Clifford 2 Harrogate Railway res 4
Rail reserves oversaw an experienced Clifford side to lift the Harrogate & District league 1 title. With a starting line up of all under 19 players, Rail started very brightly and moved the ball about quickly with quality and the home side struggled to cope. Craig Ramplin struck the bar inside the first 5 minutes with a stunning shot from 25 yards. The visitors opened the scoring after 10 minutes, when great play down the left by David Ward, Ben Williams and Phil Myles which produced a cross to the far post for Ramplin who headed home from close range.Rail were stretching Clifford with Simon & Ben Parkes pulling the strings in midfield, but were unable to break down a stubborn defence. As the half progressed the home side began to gain confidence and they began to pass the ball round well and after a lapse in defence from Rail, Clifford capitalised and drew level just before the break.
Railway knew only a win would give them the league title but they began the 2nd half on the back foot as the game became more physical and the home side weighed in with strong tackles. Rail lost their shape and discipline and paid the price as Clifford struck to take a shock lead on the hour, a goal that threatened their title challenge. The match boiled over as tempers flared and tackles rained in from both sides. Substitute Tom Hesketh came on to give Rail more experience in the centre of midfield and calm things down. The visitors settled and found their shape again. Tom Bainbridge came off the bench and made an immediate impact and levelled the score with his 1st touch. Railway were back in command and regained the initiative with Hesketh and Si Parkes finding their passes. Within 2 minutes Bainbridge got his 2nd with a good finish. Clifford were beginning to tire as the youngsters finished strongly and the championship was rapped up when pressure in the home penalty area resulted in a home defender finding his own net.It rounded off a great season for the youngsters who `s ages range between 16 and 21, with the most of them playing their 1st season in open age football. A big congratulations to all the lads who have been involved throughout the season and well done to Bob Moffat and Steve Donague who have managed and coached the players. |
